Memorial Day Events in Novi 2016

On Monday, May 30, 2016, the City of Novi will commemorate Memorial Day with a morning of activities focused on reflection and tributes to veterans who served and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. More than 30 veterans, 20 scouts, 13 civic organizations and 500 runners will showcase community pride at the Memorial Day Run, parade and Memorial Service. The parade entry deadline is May 25.

Memorial Day Run
The day begins at 8 am with the 5th annual Memorial Day Run with 5K and 10K races. The one-mile Fun Run will begin at 9 am. The starting line is located at Fuerst Park (Ten Mile and Taft Roads). Pre-registration is recommended at novimemorialdayrun.com.

Cemetery Ceremony
At 8:45 a.m., a tribute ceremony, presented by VFW Post 1519 and American Legion Post 147, will take place at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens (Novi and Twelve Mile Roads).

Parade
The parade begins at 10am and travels west along Ten Mile Road from Karim Boulevard to the Novi Civic Center. Parade highlights include Novi High School and Middle School bands, antique cars, several Novi businesses, churches and civic organizations. Floats will be available for Veterans to ride in and families may decorate their bikes and join the parade.

Residents and Veterans are encouraged to pre-register online at cityofnovi.org, in-person at the Older Adult Services or Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services offices, Meadowbrook Activity Center, or by calling (248) 347-0414.

Memorial Service
Following the parade, veterans both living and deceased will be honored with a fitting tribute with the American Legion Post 147 and VFW Post 1519 laying a wreath, a gun salute, taps and musical tributes. The Novi Choralaires will perform “God Bless America.”

Army veteran and Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America (MPVA) Veterans Service Officer Joseph Shaeffer will serve as the guest speaker. His message will remind everyone that veterans’ sacrifices date back years before us and will go on years after us; during peace time and war time. We should strive to never forget the efforts of those who have fallen for our freedom.

Veteran Luncheon
Veterans and their families will enjoy a lunch, presented by American Legion – Post 147, VFW Post 1519 and Jersey Mike’s Subs following the Memorial Service at the Novi Civic Center.

The Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service are sponsored by Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America, Consulate Health Care, American Legion – Post 147, Veterans of Foreign Wars – Post 1519, Jersey Mike’s Subs and Busch’s Fresh Food Market.
